Philip Tyus, a cherished and respected member of the Jackson County community, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, at the age of 97, in Marianna, Florida. Born on March 29, 1927, to the late Elijah Tyus and Sally Cloud Tyus, Philip’s life was a testament to the enduring spirit of hard work, family devotion, and the simple joys of life.
Philip was a lifelong resident of Jackson County, where he laid down roots and raised a family that would be his greatest legacy. Philip was a pillar of strength and determination, always doing whatever was necessary to support his family and provide for their needs. He was a man who knew the value of a day’s work and instilled this ethic in his children.
For many years, Philip served the community as a dedicated maintenance worker for the City of Marianna. His commitment to his work was matched only by his commitment to his family and his love for the simple pleasures in life. Philip’s hands, often calloused from labor, were equally skilled at reeling in a fish or singing a melody. He loved to fish, finding peace and solitude in the rhythmic dance of nature. Singing was another of Philip’s joys, and he could frequently be found humming a tune or sharing a song to entertain his family, who meant the world to him.
Philip’s life was marked by the love he had for his family, and he leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories that will be cherished by those who survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Sally Tyus; a daughter, Dora Tyus Stephens; a son, Philip Tyus, Jr.; and his ten siblings. His legacy continues through his loving children, Genell Tyus Hoskins, Sally Tyus Ray, Dianne Tyus, Cathy Tyus Peacock, Bill Tyus, and Jeff Tyus. Philip also leaves behind a legacy of numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss his guidance, humor, and songs.
Philip’s life was a reflection of the values he held dear: hard work, family, and the simple joys that make life worth living. His presence in the community was a constant, as reliable as the sunrise, and his absence will be felt deeply by those who knew and loved him. His family takes comfort in the knowledge that his was a life well-lived, full of moments that will be remembered and stories that will be told for generations to come.
As we say farewell to Philip Tyus, we celebrate a life that was rich in experience and love. A life that, though now complete, will continue to inspire and influence all who had the pleasure of knowing this remarkable man. Philip’s song may have ended, but his melody lingers on in the hearts of his family and friends, a sweet refrain of a life beautifully lived.

A Funeral Service will be held for Philip on Friday, January 24, 2025, in the chapel of McAlpin Funeral Home beginning at 1:00 PM Central Time. Interment will immediately follow in Welcome Church Assembly of God Cemetery. There will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the funeral service.
