County awaiting Keaton canal surveys

County awaiting Keaton canal surveys

Posted on September 4, 2026

An aerial photo of Keaton Beach — taken prior to Hurricane Idalia (Aug. 30, 2023), Hurricane Debby (Aug. 5, 2024) and the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene (Sept. 26, 2024) — shows the Keaton Beach canal system during an extremely high tide and many of the homes that were damaged or destroyed by high winds and storm surge nearly two years ago. With the completion of a new round of survey work, Taylor County is one step closer to being able to re-advertise for bids on the canal dredging project.

County officials are awaiting the results of new surveys of the Keaton Beach canals that will provide a more accurate measure of the amount of sediment that must be removed as part of the county’s planned canal dredging project in the wake of hurricanes Idalia, Debby and Helene.
