Tori Amos first beguiled Orlando when she swept into town on the headwinds of game-changing record Little Earthquakes in 1992, almost 35 years ago. This week she returns, like an avenging prophet, this time to the Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center — as a much-needed balm to a hellish year.
This is happy news to devotees who have been waiting patiently. Amos comes armed with songs from a fantastical 18th album, The Times of Dragons, a keening voice untouched by time and haunting piano chords. This latest “cross-country road movie for the mind” addresses a lot of what’s going on all around us (waves arms wildly until they fall off) and will no doubt feature in the night, but you’ll still hear the treasured hits and melodic confidences shared between Amos and her fanbase all these many years. (You very well may hear “Cornflake Girl!”)
What’s more, the tour kick-off shows will be unique in that Amos will be joined only by bassist Jon Evans and her backing vocalists The Angel Witches. Without a drummer, songs will likely be drastically transformed. Expect the unexpected, as the saying goes …
